294 - Quotes and web sales

Here's a cool and tricky lead in to a sales pitch. Take a leason from this if you ever want to sell something on the web.
When watching the movie some of the quotes can go by quickly. Have the cursor on the pause button.
And no the DVD is not free. You have to buy the book to get the "free" dvd.

290 - Letter from grandma

Ran across an old joke. This is one of thse jokes that I like to read several times because it's funny no matter how many times you read it. I picture this actually going on as I read it.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Son,
The other day I went up to a local Christian bookstore and saw a "honk if you love Jesus" bumper sticker.

I was feeling particularly sassy that day because I had just come from a thrilling choir performance, followed by a thunderous prayer meeting, so I bought the sticker and put it on my bumper. Boy, I'm glad I did! What an uplifting experience that followed!

I was stopped at a red light at a busy intersection, just lost in thought about the Lord and how good He is and I didn't notice that the light had changed. It is a good thing someone else loves Jesus because if he hadn't honked, I'd never have noticed!

I found that LOTS of people love Jesus! Why, while I was sitting there, the guy behind started honking like crazy, and then he leaned out of his window and screamed, "For the love of GOD! GO! GO! Jesus Christ, GO!"

What an exuberant cheerleader he was for Jesus!

Everyone started honking! I just leaned out of my window and started waving and smiling at all these loving people. I even honked my horn a few times to share in the love! There must have been a man from Florida back there because I heard him yelling something about a "sunny beach"... I saw another guy waving in a funny way with only his middle finger stuck up in the air. Then I asked my teenage grandson in the back seat what that meant, he said that it was probably a Hawaiian good luck sign or something.

Well, I've never met anyone from Hawaii, so I leaned out the window and gave him the good luck sign back.

A couple of the people were so caught up in the joy of the moment that they got out of their cars and started walking towards me. I bet they wanted to pray or ask what church I attended, but this is when I noticed the light had changed. So, I waved to all my sisters and brothers grinning, and drove on through the intersection.

I noticed I was the only car that got through the intersection before the light changed again and I felt kind of sad that I had to leave them after all the love we had shared, so I slowed the car down, leaned out of the window and gave them all the Hawaiian good luck sign one last time as I drove away.

289 - Sleep

Did you ever try to go to bed early even if you were not tired? Well it doesn't work for me. I went to bed at 10:00 last night (a few hours ago) and you can see what time this post was made. I just lay there thinking, anytime now I'll fall asleep. NOT. So I wind up getting up at 1:15 thinking I'll check Woot, do a post, and maybe go read for a while. This is the life of a late night person. I never could get to sleep before midnight no matter how hard (or soft) I tried. Luckily I've been RETIRED for a while, so it really doesn't matter!!! HA!!! I still get 8 hours, they're just a different set of hours than most people.

282 - Road rage in Missouri

Here's one reason why carrying a gun with you in your vehicle is not a good idea. If this nut job didn't have a gun he might not have decided to chase a 16 year old all the way to the kids' high school.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

TROY, MO. — A man pointed a gun at a student in the parking lot of Troy Buchanan High School after a dispute on Highway 61 Friday morning, police said.

No one was injured in the incident that happened about 7:45 a.m. as classes were beginning for the day. Police said a Washington, Mo., man who is in his 30s followed a 16-year-old student into the parking lot. The student parked near the front of the school and when both got out of their vehicles, they began arguing and the man pointed a gun at the student, school officials said.

Both the man and the student had called police. A school resource officer went to the lot, took the gun from the man, and he was taken into custody. Police released the man later that morning but still are investigating, Troy Police Chief Jeff Taylor said. He would not give details on what happened on Highway 61 between the man and the student.

Some students witnessed the parking lot confrontation, and teachers and parents were notified, said April Huddleston, spokeswoman for Troy schools. Parents of the student, whose name was not released, declined to comment through a school official.

Senior Shelly Harrison was with a group of about three dozen students waiting on a bus to leave the school for college credit courses when they noticed police cars at the school. "We were all staring and wondering what was happening," Harrison said.

The case has been referred to the Lincoln County prosecutor, who could not be reached for comment Friday.

280 - Hillary

Hillary was(?)in town on Saturday. Here's the story on (?). The news said to be at the high school gym at 8:00pm. They said send an RSVP on the net so Hillary's crew can figure out how many people are coming. My wife sent the RSVP. I'm sitting there thinking, do we really want to attend this mob scene?
So what the hell, let's go, it's 7:00. We get there around 7:30. I'm thinking, we're getting here way too late. I was right. The gym was packed to the gills. They had anticipated this though and had big screen monitors all over the place. Cafeteria, front hall, side halls, etc.....
So we're standing in the school hallway watching a monitor of the gym. 8:00 - no Hillary. 8:15 - no Hillary. 8:30 - I say to my wife, lets beat the crowd and leave now. She agrees. We get back home at 9:00 and turn on the news. What's on TV? A shot of the gym showing people waiting for Hillary.
The last I saw on the news at 9:45 Hillary's plane still hadn't landed yet. We watched a movie. "16 Blocks" It was a pretty good movie. As I write this I still don't know if she showed up.

Update - she showed up "late last night" per a news story.

278 - 2d:4d digit ratio

I don't think I've posted this before. It was on a list of things I should post but that usually doesn't mean anything. But I digress. Here's the first paragraph from one of the better articles on this subject and then a link to the whole article. For more information than you ever wanted to know about the subject, google "2d:4d digit ratio".

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take a look at your right-hand. Which of your fingers is longer: your ring finger, or your index finger? Surprisingly, a passing stranger who noticed a difference in length between these two fingers (and who had handy a copy of John Manning's book Digit Ratio: A Pointer to Fertility, Behavior and Health) might infer some very personal characteristics about you. With no more data than that gleaned from a passing glance at your hands, a stranger might infer whether you are likely to have homosexual inclinations, are highly fertile, may eventually suffer from a heart attack or breast cancer, have musical aptitude or sporting prowess, and a surprisingly long list of other characteristics.

276 - OJ and the Judge

"I think OJ deserves everything bad that happens to him." Repeat this statement several hundred times. But ......... (long pause here) ............... I would hate to come before a judge that seems to be having an emotional snit fit like this one.
All she had to do was tell him that he violated bail and he's going to jail. End of story. By getting snotty with him it just opens up an avenue for appeal.

The video is/was on Yahoo.

And Uncle Jay even mentions OJ this week.

275 - Old saying

Here's an old saying that bears repeating and some back up info I found.

"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross."
Sinclair Lewis, (It Can't Happen Here, 1935)

Here are some characteristics of very *early* nazi rule, about 1933--1935, *before* the massacres. (from Joe T.)

1. Determined to move to one-party politics
2. Harassment and vilification of political opponents
3. Evoking God as guider of their destiny
4. Punishment of the "work-shy" (welfare), retarded, the aged, and homosexuals
5. Censorship of art forms as "degenerate" and "pornographic"
6. Marked and clandestine leanings toward closet homosexuality within party leaders
7. leanings toward racial purity and abolishing immigration
8. virulently anti-abortion
9. militarily aggressive
10. debt-driven, frantic economy
11. Feelings of having a superior form of government
12. hatred of liberalism in all forms

274 - Phone survey

When I get called by the phone survey people I usually say thanks but no thanks and hang up. But this guy managed to get the first question out of his mouth before I could say anything. "What do you think of George Bush?" That lead to me answering questions for 10 minutes.

What do you think of Bushes Security Secretary, of the CIA, of the NSA, of warrentless wiretapping, of waterboarding, and on and on.

He found out pretty quick I was left of center. But all his question were about far right ideals. (I.E. If they don't agree with us, let's kill 'em) I don't remember who he said he was calling for but I got to unload about Bush and his goofy ideas on how to run a country. I felt better afterwards.

273 - What to believe

I was watching Charlie Rose tonight and they were deep into black vs female vs male. Of course they were talking about the Democrats because that's where the stories are right now. It's as if the election was going to take place in St. Louis City.
What's that mean? Well the City of St. Louis is heavily Democratic (80%+). So the primaries are actually the main election. Whoever wins the Democratic primary has a lock on the final election.
That seems to be the way the press is handling these 'way to early' presidential caucuses. They are acting like whoever wins the Democratic primary is going to be the next president. Let's not get to over confident here please. All we need is for some Republican dark horse to come charging out at the last minute and steal the limelight.

My new political observation. Remember you heard it here first.

Democrats irritate people.
Republicans piss people off.

(Dark HORSE, not house. You think you catch all the goofs but nooooo!)

269 - Keeping up

Keeping up with all the information and opinions on line has become an impossible task. I saw a letter to the editor in the paper today and thought I would post it. 268 - Double barrel politics

The KKK wanted their name on road signs for the highway liter pickup program in the St. Louis area. The highway department said no. The KKK went to court and won. The highway department named the KKK pickup area "The Rosa Parks Memorial Highway". The KKK never picked up anything. Down came the KKK signs.

264 - Travelog 1

Here's some tips for travelers. When renting a car for $38 a day and for $42 a day you can get 'extra protection', ask what the TOTAL cost will be and see if you can get a straight answer. You ask them, "Is that 4 extra dollars a day? Or is that 42 extra dollars a day?" Listen to the bullshit gobbledegook that will come flowing your direction then. We didn't bite on that one.
One I did bite on and kicked myself for falling for it was as follows. The easy way to handle returning the car with a full tank of gas is to just buy the gas from the rental company at the return time. Right? I mean, they're charging $.20 a gallon less than street prices. What could go wrong? Ohhhhhh, did we forget to mention that we charge you for a full tank of gas no matter how much gas is in the tank. Well the solution is easy. Just return the car with the tank empty. What?! How am I going to time that one? Pull into every gas station I see and put in $.50 of gas and hope I make it back to the rental car place? Live and learn.

(editing note - gobbledegook is in dictionary.com but not Googles' spell checker)

262 - One more net irritation

I was looking at some news today, using the scroll button on the mouse to go down the page as I read. Suddenly the scroll button didn't work anymore. What's going on! Well guess what. I had scrolled over an ad with the cursor and the ad shut the scroll feature off making me stop and look at the ad. I had to move the cursor off the ad to get it to scroll again. One more thing to piss you off while surfing the net.
