5771 - Music hooks

Hmmmm, post the whole article on music hooks or... a link it is!

Here's a song that has had a hook for me going all the way back to the early 60's. It's the guitar line in the background. Do do do  do do do  do do do  DOO  do do do.
The brass is a bonus hook.

A comment from the FB article...

"Reza Ziai...
It would be good if they actually discussed the dynamics of hooks. Neuroscientists don't typically know music, so I'll give a stab here: It's gotta be 4/4 and 120 bpm with no more than 3 or 4 notes in the whole song...and don't you dare make it more than 3:30 long. And above all make sure you boost at around 60Hz and add way more compression than you'd ever actually need."

  1. "hooks" for me are usually drums and piano, and anything with a good steady beat for walking exercise.

  2. Why do us Humans just Love us a Good Hook, be it in Music or the Written or Spoken Word? I confess I try to use some creative Hook Title dynamics on the ole' Blog, sometimes it draws folks in more out of the Curiosity factor. Perhaps thinking something Clever or Fascinating will be in the Post? *LOL*

  3. River - It just depends on the song for me.

Dawn - I try not to surprise too many people with the post title. But sometimes you can't help but come up with a crazy title.

  4. I know it when I hear it! Thanks, Mike

  5. Hooks are also a major factor in advertising ... think "can you hear me now?" and "everybody doesn't like something, but nobody doesn't like Sara Lee."

  6. I was pretty sure I should know what that song was, but it only took a couple of bars for me to verify that fact.

  7. Bill - Is the hook on the progressive commercial Flo?

Shaw - It is isn't it!

Kathy - Do you remember 'Johnny K and the Runaways'? This was a song they played every time. http://www.stlmusicyesterdays.com/Johnny%20K%20&%20the%20Runaways.htm

Deb - Science rules! (As in, 'in charge')

  8. we were listening to Fleetwood Mac, and I commented on their super drummer. The drum always catches/hook me. As for ear worms, I wish they were good music, not "Small small world".
