1937 - DERECHOS

As of Friday I'd never heard of a derecho. But with the heat wave going on I'm checking out the NOAA weather website. One of the topics was great big storms with a huge bow echo leading the storm. A derecho.

And what are they talking about on the news on Saturday? A derecho. IKR! Who would have figured that I find out about a derecho one day and one happen the next!

Bilbo didn't post Saturday. I hope everything is OK and he and all the other DC and East coast bloggers are just without power like half the East coast.

You can look at the facts about a derecho HERE. Then tomorrow maybe one will happen for you.

The storm came out of nowhere on Friday night about 10:00, and we lost power almost immediately. No other damage, and the juice came back on last night. We were very lucky ... big swaths of the tri-state area are still dark, and a lot of secondary roads are still blocked with debris and downed power lines. Scary. I'd never even HEARD of a derecho, and would just as soon not hear of one ever again.

Thanks for the information about derechos. I'll pass on that type of storm, if I can.

I wonder what the equivalent of a derecho is in the Southern Hemisphere. Its not a tidbit of information thats easily surfacing....

Bilbo - The news is saying some places may not have power for a week.

Duck - They sound nasty. And Saturday proved it.

Amanda - I didn't see anything that would indicate a different name. It was just really weird that I found out about it one day and one happened the next.

Elvis - Especially timely for me.

That is one scary ass cloud formation right there.

This kind of heat is going to create spectacular storms like the ones that hit this weekend. Hope there aren't too many of them though.

Jay - The cloud looks like it's getting ready to pounce.
