A friend sent this to me today:
Today's Lesson
The SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)/Food Stamp Program,
administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is pleased to be
distributing the greatest amount of free meals and food stamps ever.
Meanwhile, the National Park Service, administered by the U.S.
Department of the Interior, asks us to "Please Do Not Feed The Animals."
They say that this is because the animals may grow dependent on handouts
and not learn to take care of themselves.
Thus endeth today’s lesson.

Well, yes, to a point. The very people that are pushing this would deny that people are animals. And here's the main thing that's wrong with this. People are supposed to be better than lower animals when it comes to moral judgments. And not feeding people and letting them die because of the 'law of the jungle' would not quite be human. But that doesn't stop some people from espousing the view above. I think it makes some people feel superior to see other people die while they don't.
What we need is better monitoring, not less helping.

Geez, Mike, what's wrong with you, talking sense like that? Why do you hate America?
Wouldn't it be a scary world if we were left to the laws of the jungle? For humans survival of the 'fittest' really means, 'richest'.
your last line says it all!
Yep, I've received a few of those myself...stupid!
Bilbo - Hate America, me? Hey, I'm up on all the latest trends.
Amanda - Scary indeed.
Dianne - And that would put more people to work.
John - Too many times.
I feed the birds and squirrels -- sometimes the animals need a little assistance.
The SNAP program also serves as a subsidy for agriculture. This gives farmers a break, not unlike ethanol for underwriting the corn farmers.
Heidi - Good point. But look out for the haters. They may not like that too.
Angel - That's true. But it has swung from mostly farm aid in the past to mostly food stamps today. And with any government program, people abuse it. Before and now.
