1942 - The state of confusion

Here's a good trivia question. What was the 14th state to apply for admission to the Union? Here's a clue from Wikipedia.... In 1791, Vermont joined the United States as the 14th state, the first outside the original 13 Colonies. .... Sounds like the answer doesn't it? Well guess what! Wrong. There was a state that applied and was refused admission to the good ol' US of A. What state? Why the State of Franklin.

The what? Hey you learn something new everyday right? Here's where the State of Franklin used to exist.

At the time it was just three counties and they succeeded from North Carolina at the time to form their own state, applied for admission to the new USA, and almost got in. Frontline had a half hour show on it the other night. Here's a minute clip from the show.

The whole show doesn't seem to be on the net yet.

Very informative. They didn't want to be Tarheels. I don't blame them.

I've heard of the State of Franklin, but didn't know much about it. I'll be interested in seeing the whole PBS show.

I knew this one because I saw it on the History Channel back in the day. You know, back when they actually had history shows on.

Heidi - I figured you knew about this already from high school in Tennessee.

Lizbeth - Yes it is.

King - They still consider themselves separate.

Bilbo - It should be showing up soon on the Frontline website. Don't know why it's not there now.

Jay - They must have run out of history to talk about.

A very interesting bit of history. Apparently the Appalachians were a real barrier making a larger North Carolina unworkable.
