Claudia and I were watching television the other night when suddenly there was a BOOM! It sounded like it came from the south end of the house. It sounded like someone had dropped a large heavy box on the the floor but there was no vibration to go with it.
So I got up and looked everywhere. Inside, outside, basement, garage, roof, and found... nothing. I finally gave up thinking one day I would run across something that would make me go 'So THAT'S what made the noise'.
So yesterday Claudia is watching the news and they are interviewing a woman that couldn't figure out a loud booming noise she heard. That's when we found out about 'frost quakes'.
From wikipedia...
A cryoseism, also known as an ice quake or a frost quake, may be caused by a sudden cracking action in frozen soil or rock saturated with water or ice. As water drains into ground, it may eventually freeze and expand under colder temperatures, putting stress on its surroundings. This stress builds up until relieved explosively in the form of a cryoseism.
So one of the coldest winters we've had in awhile has introduced us to a new (to us) phenomenon. You can read the (short) wikipedia article or if you want to know more, here is a link to the GOOGLE SEARCH on cryoseism's.
