3041 - Follow up

I love home repair. It keeps me busy and off the streets. Referring back to Friday's post and my plumbing problems. I got the valve in the basement fixed. All it needed was a new washer. That let me work on the shower. It needed a new water temperature balance valve that had gotten clogged up from the street work being done by the water company. $18 later, one shower back in service.

Then came the sink. Ah the sink. Shut the water off and pull the sink out? Nope. Both shut off valves leak. Another new washer? Not that easy with one of the shutoff valves. It needs a new stem. Another trip to Home Depot. Replacement stem.... doesn't work. It should, but no. Home Depot here I come for a replacement valve. It was a valve that was on with a compression nut. Here's hoping the old compression nut works with the new valve. And .... tricked ya' ... it worked.

But when we pulled the old sink out, we found water damage to the counter top. Nice. I have to rebuild the wood part of the countertop without cracking the laminate on top. Pulling out rotted wood. carefully putting in new wood.

Let's put in the new sink, right. Oops, the old hole in the counter isn't quite big enough. 3/8" off all most of the way around. OK that's a router job that we have to be very careful with. Don't want to crack the laminate or route out to far.

So there is hope of getting this all done today. Needless to say there has been a lot of poddering the situation going on. If I was working at someone else's house I'd be done by now. But since it's my house I can take a break and think about things for awhile. Or do a post. You know, important stuff. That sink will still be there tomorrow. Besides, there's another sink in the laundry room right next to the kitchen.

Time to ponder.

Ah, retirement life, you can do this any day - relax for now. Think about your next trip to Home Depot.

Mike, glad it's working out. Some would start out to fix something, then make a bigger issue than before that ends up costing lots. We have the right to rest, you know.

Yeah, I'm taking a break from replacing the burners on my gas grill. Pretty soon it will be too hot to finish it today and I'll have to wait until tomorrow morning.

If a job is to be done well, it's worth resting up to do it!
