3069 - SB8 - Soccer

It's called soccer. No really. And here's why from Dictionary.com.

Word Origin and History for soccer...
n.
1889, socca, later socker (1891), soccer (1895), originally university slang (with jocular formation -er (3)), from a shortened form of Assoc., abbreviation of association in Football Association (as opposed to Rugby football); cf. rugger. An unusual method of formation, but those who did it perhaps shied away from making a name out of the first three letters of Assoc.

So if you say soccer and someone tries to correct you with football, say, "Do you mean rugby football, or asSOCiation football... soccer for short."

We Americans KNOW what we mean by football. Nuts to what the Pommies call it.

Rugger and Soccer. But more often Footer. Adding -er (or -a) to things is a bit of a pretend posh English thing.Like Brekkers for Breakfast, Champers for Bubbly or the Varsity Match as Twickers (its played at Twickenham)

We have to refer to your game as 'American Football'
