3501 - Voting

Well it was an interesting day for voting yesterday.

No more big ol' voting books to flip through. The ones where you could see who else with the nearly same name had voted already because they were on the same page as you. No more initialing your address as correct.

Nope, none of that. There was a guy sitting there with an iPad and a flat scanner. I handed him my drivers license, he flipped it over so the back was facing up, set it on the tray, it scanned the bar code, then printed out a receipt that I used to vote.

And I had to sign my name. On the iPad screen. You know how good that looks by signing with one of those rubber tipped thingy's.  Sort of like trying to sign your name on an etch-a-sketch. The guy before me just made a scribble across the screen like you do at the grocery store. No problem sir. Here's your voting slip.

By the way, he never looked at the picture on my drivers license to see if it was me. Nope, not even a glance. He was too busy getting the bar code on the back of the license lined upon the scanner. So much for picture voter ID.

Didn't even look at this side.

Picture voter ID could work if people actually look at the pictures. But, hey, this is a lot like getting carded in some communities,

Bouncers rarely look at IDs of hot girls.

When I went through election officer training here in Fairfax County, VA, we were instructed to check the expiration date of the document first, then compare the photo to the voter and make sure that they "substantially matched." This wasn't always easy, as sometimes people had new, bushy beards or had shaved old, bushy beards off; changed their hair color (usually women, but some men); had grown bald; etc. Some of the toughest were black voters, because their photos were very often too dark, making it very hard to distinguish actual features. Only after the date check and the photo comparison were we to scan the bar codes. The Poll Pads worked really well, and allowed us to check in huge numbers of voters quickly and accurately.
