4738 - A letter to the editor

Here is a letter to the editor that was printed in a local paper in St. Louis County.

******************

To the editor:

Is the virus a conspiracy theory?

Would you like to hear a conspiracy theory about the China virus? Just think. President Trump has a 40 percent base that loves him, he is an incumbent president with a great economy, and they usually get re-elected.

The mainstream media hates Trump, so does the other 40 percent of our country. That includes, but is not limited to, NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and MSNBC.

He will be re-elected despite that fact. The 20 percent in the middle vote with logic, and they see what has happened under President Trump.

So along comes the China virus. Oh by the way, viruses are usually named after their country or city or origin. I will give you one example: Lyme disease, which was named after Lyme, Connecticut. You can look the others up.

The 40 percent that hates President Trump, the mainstream media and the Dems must get rid of him. Spying on him didn’t work, the Mueller hoax didn’t work, the fake Russian dossier didn’t work and impeachment didn’t work…. Time to panic. Now to quote the Obama administration, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.” We have the China virus, so let’s create a panic and crash the economy. That will get rid of him. It worked for my retirement, I lost 30 percent.

The virus is real, the panic it created may not be necessary.

Ridiculous, you say. Remember back to 2009 and the swine flu or H1N1. It affected 61 million people in the US and it killed 13,000 in our country.

Remember the big panic? Oh yeah, there was none. Why, you ask? President Obama was in charge and all of the media loved him, hence no panic, no mass closings, no stock market crash. You could buy toilet paper and go out to eat.

Think about it while you are stuck at home or in line to buy TP. Was this necessary?

***************

So let's look at some of these claims.

"...with a great economy..."   Great for who? The billionaires or the people working two minimum wage jobs?

"The mainstream media hates Trump..."   The mainstream media is owned by trumpers. Just think how he would be treated if the media really was still independent.

"The 20 percent in the middle vote with logic, and they see what has happened under President Trump."   Yes, they do. Yes, they do.

"...viruses are usually named after their country or city of origin." Swine flu? Lyme disease, Old Lyme Connecticut. So why not Wuhan virus? Why China?

"...the Mueller hoax didn’t work, the fake Russian dossier didn’t work and impeachment didn’t work..."   All this was real and killed by a Republican Senate.

"Now to quote the Obama administration, “Never let a good crisis go to waste.”
"Rahm Emanuel repeated his “never let a crisis go to waste” catchphrase while discussing the coronavirus pandemic."
"The former Obama adviser reprised the quote he used during the 2008 financial crisis while speaking on ABC’s This Week on Sunday. “Never allow a crisis to go to waste,” Emanuel said. “Start planning for the future. This has to be the last pandemic that creates an economic depression. We're going to have more pandemics, but this has to be the last economic depression.”
And Obama did plan for the future by creating a pandemic response team that tRUMP disbanded.
"Charles Doyle of the University of Georgia, coauthor on the forthcoming Yale Book of Modern Proverbs, has found that this expression is now commonly applied to economic or diplomatic crises that can be exploited to advance political agendas, but he traced it back at least as far as 1976, when M. F. Weiner wrote an article in the journal Medical Economics entitled “Don’t Waste a Crisis — Your Patient’s or Your Own.” Weiner meant by this that a medical crisis can be used to improve aspects of personality, mental health, or lifestyle."

"...2009 ... swine flu or H1N1. It affected 61 million people in the US and it killed 13,000 in our country."   confirmed cases - 60.8 million    deaths - 12,469   So he was close on these.

"Remember the big panic? ...no mass closings, no stock market crash..."
We were starting to recover from the George Bush stock market crash. How much did you lose in that crash?
"By 28 October 2009, about 600 schools in the United States had been temporarily closed, affecting over 126,000 students in 19 states."

All that said, the right-wingers are still trying to blame everything on Obama when all the middle and the left-wingers know full well it's tRUMPs fault.

Mike, once again you forgot to say that the number of people being affected is literally infinitesimal when compared to the actual worlds population, that more than anything else is the obvious evidence that it is indeed all a ludicrous hoax, i`m not sure what the purpose of it is or who originally instigated it, but i dont think its got anything to do with Mr. Trump, it might turn out to be something much more sinister or even some kind of elaborate practical joke thats been played on the entire world by some super-rich looney.

Covid-19 has already killed over 6,000 Americans with fewer than 250,000 confirmed cases. Imagine what the death toll will be if it, too, gets to 60,000,000 cases.

As to the total number affected, the point here is the huge rate of growth. At the beginning of March the US had about 100 confirmed cases, and a month later it was well over 100,000. The reason for all these draconian measures is that we can see where this is going, not just where it already is, and we're trying to stop it before it turns into a world-class catastrophe.

anne marie in philly - You're as crazy as the guy that wrote the letter.
What it has to do with tRUMP is he delayed the US response by saying it would just go away. It obviously isn't going away. tRUMP also disbanded the pandemic response team.

I hope these card carrying idiots keep to themselves and or get this and then watch the hoax. What incredibly dumb and ignorant statements. Yes, the dems and media have such power to kill off Italy and the UK. Karma will get them is all we can hope for.

Anne from Philly - open a book - watch the BBC. Forget America for just a minute and you'll leave your bubble and see what is real. I have a Republican friend who's mother is now dying. Think she thinks this is a hoax? Get a grip

It's hard to get people to change their minds, even about seemly obvious things like this. The majority of them don't want to think about it and minority just don't know how to think (in terms of assembling facts to thoughtfully analyze so as to come to fact based conclusions). Facts aren't opinions!

Oh, and some of them are trolls, who know how to think but want to sow chaos. I wonder how many them are foreign (Russia, China, Iran, etc).

If we could only see those emails stuck to the bottom of that server in the Ukraine, we'd know Hillary is behind all this.

What the writer fails to mention in the letter is that H1N1 lasted from January 2009 to August 2010. That's 20 months to kill 13,000 people. The first recorded case of covid 19 was January 20 (I think) and we have had 9,500 plus deaths by April 6 in the US. Can't the writer see how much faster this spreads and how much more lethal it is? But of course, there is no reasoning with stupid.
