I thought this was a fun bit of trivia about baseball. If you can put up with the guys delivery in the video you can gain a bit of trivia to mess with a baseball fans head. (3 min)
And then if you want to read the Wikipedia article on the history of the field, you'll find that the only thing about the field that's still original is the 90-degree angle at home plate. Everything else has changed over the years.
Home plate started out as a 13.5 inch round metal disc.

Baseball is not popular here - and I have less than no interest in almost any sports.
As a result I am totally ignorant about them - something which I doubt will change any time soon.

The UK has a game like this. It is called Rounders and is played by girls.
Baseball is good if you go to a game and watch the whole thing intently. If you're late or go to the concession stand, you lose the vibe. And it doesn't work on TV.

Kathy - I know. A2 + B2 = C2 and the 3,4,5 triangle are about the only ones I remember.
Anon - Not quite. Rounders is like softball in the US and men and women play it.
Mark - You're right about concentrating on the game. But these days there are too many distractions at the ballpark. And I'm always looking at something else when a good play happens on the field.
None of the ball games you mentioned. And golf is a no go too - Mark Twain summed it up for me - a pleasant walk, ruined.

Jeebus, he took a long time to get there. Then he's quibbling about 0.0208 inches on a 12 inch measurement! Any reasonable engineer (like the one typing this) is going to call that close enough - well within the bounds of the measurement uncertainty of anything you could use to measure it. Dude must be a theorist and not tied to real world applications.
Brian - He did, didn't he? He should limit the number of Youtube videos he makes. But he's not quibbling. He's just pointing out a fact to harass baseball aficionados with. And the fact that baseball rules can be enforced down the tickiest of ticky dots, when you point out something like this is fun. Besides, who cares what size home plate is? The umpires don't.
