5265 - Windows 11, are you ready?

The answer is probably a big fat NO.

My computer is about 4 years old. I put a few extra bucks into it when I bought it hoping to future-proof it a little bit. I got over 10 years out of my Windows XP computer. The only thing I added to it was extra memory about 6 years in. Other than that, it was no more updates for XP or browsers or programs that killed it.

Now, it's still sitting on another desk not far from me. My son figured out how to get windows 10 on it for free. But it is sloooowwww. Windows 10 is just too much for it to handle. I'm afraid Windows 11 might be the same for the computer I'm using now. How do I know? Because I ran a program that checks things out. Here's what it showed.

I've got green on everything except the processor. An i7-6700 isn't good enough.

Here's the program link. Download it, then click the exe file. It runs and the above screen pops up.
I did read where they are trying to get more i7's to work better with Win 11. I thought I'll just upgrade my CPU. Uhhh, nope. Not without getting a new motherboard.

From a Microsoft blog post...

"Guy: i7-6700 is a sufficient CPU for windows 11. It is eligible for all of the demands of windows 11. I need a reasonable reason. Why don't windows11 support i7-6700? Is MS preparing for i7-6700? or not? Let me know a plan about i7-6700.

Expert: We don't have any updates on 6th generation processors. Microsoft is currently testing Windows 11 for 7th generation processors."

Want to see all the processors currently supported? Sure you do!

Where I started my search from...

If you want to see what Win 11 is going to look like, here's a link...

It looks like I'm going to hang onto Windows 10 for as long as possible. And that possibility runs out October 14th, 2025 when Microsoft quits supporting it.

Sigh.
Big sigh.

Sue - Why do I have a feeling Windows 11 won't be around long before Windows 12 shows up and you'll need another new computer?

Mike, its OK, October 14th 2025 doesn't matter one iota, Bill Gates has stated quite categorically that all windows 10 users laptops will work fine after that date as long the user has every picture that was ever taken of the truly astonishing 17 year-old Pauline Hickey from 1985 downloaded to their computer, so, in theory anyway, that should ensure that literally every laptop/computer in the entire world will still function perfectly without anyone having to bother to change to Windows 11. Once again Mike it just goes to show how unbelievable and incredible that amazing bird was 36 years ago ! ! !.

This is why I love the Mac OS. Agnes has two desktop computers running Windows 10 (one to drive her Photoshop program and the other to drive her high-end embroidery sewing machines) and a laptop (that she uses for Photoshop and for digitizing patterns for her computer-drive sewing machines). I'd switch her away from Windows, but she'd have to get all new versions of the software she has already spent thousands of $ on.

I'm a MAC girl myself. So I don't have to worry about it.

I'm so low tech that I buy cheap laptops and use them until they are so slow or no longer function and them buy another cheap laptop.
I haven't had a desktop since Windows 3.1!
I think I still used C/ prompts to sign in.

I bought a mac for my desktop last year, although I still have my tower that I need to export the photos from. I also have a geriatric laptop. I wonder if I buy a new one now it will have the 'oomph' to run Windows 11?

Time for you to move to Linux?
I have double boot on my current i3 laptop.

LJ - So come time, will you do a mass distribution of all the pictures?

Bill - ... ... ... nope nope nope. For many reasons, I don't heart Mac's. And here's some info on Mac end of support dates. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MacOS_version_history

Deb - Follow the URL in my comment to Bill above.

John - You could go back even further to IBMs PL1. It doesn't even give you a prompt.

Kathy - I would wait to buy a new laptop until they start coming with Win 11 installed. That way you know it will work.

Stu - Oh, how many times have I thought of that. Back in the 80's I was using Unix at the phone company. Since we were the phone company we had access to the internet before it was "the internet". All the universities were on the "internet". We could anonymous FTP into any University and find the directory that had all the Unix info we wanted. We had a long list of IP address that people would keep adding to as they found new ones. I still have all my Unix and Linux books. I even got some free Linux discs but never loaded any of them. They are so out of date now I should pitch them.

Hell.... 4 failed attempts by win-update to install H2 and they want me to go 11?
it's an old desktop that I added more memory too. I have no pressing need to go to 11.
After running the check you mentioned, my cpu & motherboard aren't supported.... so FU MS.

Chief - I got H2 to install the first time. But my PC is only 4 years old. They have a long list of CPUs that are supported for Win 11 but my guess is they are all 2 years old or newer. My son installed Win 10 on an old XP computer that has extra memory. Win 10 runs slooowww.
