5456 - It's free!

I've was busy yesterday. My son got a "free" Nordictrack treadmill like the one in the picture from a friend of my daughter. All we had to do was pick it up.

One thing you can't tell from this picture is how big it is. Or how freakin' heavy it is!

We got to the house of the giver, took one look at it in the basement (right by a basement door with 6 steps straight up to the outside), and said that's not going to fit through the door.

We asked her how they got it down there. She didn't know. The more we looked, the more we realized we were going to have to disassemble it.

We found the manual online and proceeded to disassemble it. I'm glad I carry tools in my car. We got it down to the base (where the motor is) and belt assembly. They don't come apart. The belt folds up to make so it will fit through a doorway. Guess where 90% of the weight is. We had to call for reinforcements. My son-in-law didn't know what he was getting into.

The three of us managed to get it up the 6 stairs and out to the street where my trailer was. We were staring at it waiting for it to lift itself into the trailer when two guys driving by said "Hey you need some help?" Oh hell yeah! So 5 of us managed to manhandle it into my trailer.

We got it to my house and were back to 3 people. Getting it out of the trailer was easier. Getting down the 13 steps into the basement was not fun but we got it done.

One of these days it will get reassembled.

I remember the time I decided to save a bunch of money by having our high-tech exercise bike delivered to the end of our driveway and getting it into the house and assembling it myself. Won't be doin' THAT again.

Sounds like everyone had a major workout already, thanks to it!

I'm exhausted just reading about this.

I hop after all that work your son actually uses the machine.

After helping my daughter pack and move to CO, I reminded her that her dad is in his 60s and they need to find younger friends.

Which is one reason I won't be buying a treadmill even though I would like one :)

Reminds me of moving our piano, twice. Each time it took four strong men and they weren't all that happy about it even then. That piano is never leaving this house, which is a shame because it's the one I grew up playing.

Bill - Sometimes I forget that I'm 75 years old and start a project with a "can do" attitude. It doesn't take long to have life slap me back to reality.

Deb - TWO workouts at least!

Shaw - I will be telling all my friends, DON"T DO THIS!

Kathy - That brings us to our next problem. The ceiling in the basement. He's 6'4". The old broken treadmill had a lower belt than the newer one. He stood on the new one and his head hit the ceiling. If I raise the ceiling under the treadmill I can get another 2-3 inches. I'm not sure that will be enough.

John - That's what I told my daughter 7 years ago when she and SiL move to a new house.

Jenny - Pay to have the treadmill installed. ... I've got a piano moving story but that's another post.

Wow. That doesn't sound like a fun project but glad it all worked out. Enjoy your new treadmill.

All that work and now the ceilings too low 🤣. Sorry, don't mean to laugh but hey it was free 👍😉

We have done some stupid moving of heavy really heavy stuff. I won't get started by most of them were regretted immediately.

Matt - It hasn't quite worked out yet. I have to see if I can raise the ceiling a little.

CC - It may not be free yet. If I can't fix the ceiling I may have to pay to have it hauled away.

Susan - I'm not at the regret stage yet but I'm getting close.

Remember when treadmills were simpler, (non-computerised) smaller and lighter? That's the sort of treadmill I'd like if I had space to put one.

River - Our old one that broke was one I could move around by myself.

Sounds like the Laurel and Hardy movie where they tried to move the piano.

Mike said...

Kirk - Pretty damn close.

Some of these can be extremely heavy. We had one in our previous home and decided to sell it before we moved to avoid lugging it around!

Mike said...

Martha - I couldn't believe how heavy this thing is.

Cloudia said...

Omg I can't believe you actually did that!!

Did I ever tell you about the time I helped a guy move and upright piano with nothing but one of those little square dollies with four wheels on it? Thank God for curb cuts! Cuz I mean we move that thing. Several blocks up a front stoop and into his apartment!

Mike said...

Cloudia - All these projects start out with the phrase "We can do this!"

You got it for free because 1-800-got-junk costs money!

Lady - It still supposedly works. But until I figure out the ceiling problem I won't know for sure.
