5511 - Pink slime

Do you ever start getting pink slime on your shower curtain or in the corners of your shower stall? What is that stuff?

From Wikipedia...

"Serratia marcescens is a species of rod-shaped, Gram-negative bacteria in the family Yersiniaceae. It is a facultative anaerobe and an opportunistic pathogen. It was discovered in 1819 by Bartolomeo Bizio in Padua, Italy. S. marcescens is commonly involved in hospital-acquired infections (HAIs), particularly catheter-associated bacteremia, urinary tract infections, and wound infections, and is responsible for 1.4% of HAI cases in the United States. It is commonly found in the respiratory and urinary tracts of hospitalized adults and in the gastrointestinal systems of children.

Due to its abundant presence in the environment, and its preference for damp conditions, S. marcescens is commonly found growing in bathrooms (especially on tile grout, shower corners, toilet water lines, and basins), where it manifests as a pink, pink-orange, or orange discoloration and slimy film feeding off phosphorus-containing materials or fatty substances such as soap and shampoo residue.

Once established, complete eradication of the organism is often difficult, but can be accomplished by application of a bleach-based disinfectant. Rinsing and drying surfaces after use can also prevent the establishment of the bacterium by removing its food source and making the environment less hospitable."

So, get out the bleach spray and blast away.

Yup. It pops up on the grout in our shower. And needs to be forcibly discouraged. Repeatedly.

Sue - I solved the grout problem in our bathroom with tile by not using grout. I used mildew-resistant caulk instead. It took longer but in 20 years I've never had that orange crap in between tiles.

Rinsing and drying surfaces after use is exactly what I do. Every single time. I have allergies, so moulds and other growths cannot be allowed to even get started. My shower curtain gets tossed in the washing machine about one a month too. In between those machine washes I shake it vigorously after showering to remove as much water as possible.

Orange crap has gained widespread political acceptance in today's America, and bleach ain't helping.

We wish we had enough humidity to grow any slime but alas at 5% no such luck.

Lady - 5% seems like it would suck the water right out of your skin!
