5668 - Multivitamins and old people

I've always taken multivitamins. Even after the report that said they were a waste of money. Because then the next report said to take them. Then the next report... and on and on and on.

Summary: Researchers found significant cognitive benefits for older adults who took daily multivitamin-mineral supplements.

Source: Alzheimer’s Association

Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association has published “Effects of cocoa extract and a multivitamin on cognitive function: a randomized clinical trial.”

The three-year study of more than 2,200 older adults found that daily multivitamin-mineral supplementation resulted in a statistically significant cognitive benefit.

Cocoa extract had no effect on global cognition.

Maria C. Carrillo, Ph.D., Alzheimer’s Association chief science officer, said of the study: “This is the first positive, large-scale, long-term study to show that multivitamin-mineral supplementation for older adults may slow cognitive aging. While the Alzheimer’s Association is encouraged by these results, we are not ready to recommend widespread use of a multivitamin supplement to reduce risk of cognitive decline in older adults.”

“Independent confirmatory studies are needed in larger, more diverse study populations. It is critical that future treatments and preventions are effective in all populations.”

“For now, and until there is more data, people should talk with their health care providers about the benefits and risks of all dietary supplements, including multivitamins.”

“We envision a future where there are multiple treatments and risk reduction strategies available that address cognitive aging and dementia in multiple ways — like heart disease and cancer — and that can be combined into powerful combination therapies… in conjunction with brain-healthy guidelines for lifestyle factors like diet and physical activity.”

Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

I think we need to send huge amounts of vitamin supplements to Congress. Anything that improves cognition can't hurt.

I take a multi-vitamin...
...when I remember to.

I hope "cocoa extract" doesn't mean "chocolate." Chocolate is my main health practice, lol.

Since the science keeps changing, I don't see how extra vitamins can hurt.

Eating an amazing diet will give you lots of vitamins as well as fiber and other goodies. An amazing diet is your biggest defense against all cause mortality. Mike it does not include bacon and donuts.

Cloudia - Did you take one today?

Sue - At least there has never been a study that said they were bad for you. oops! Don't tell anyone I said that.

Bill - There are a few of them where we could take several bottles and ram them down their throats.

John - I assume you took one today. Right?

Deb - There is a vitamin supplement called cocoa extract. The answer is "it depends". https://www.webmd.com/vitamins/ai/ingredientmono-812/cocoa

Kathy - They don't cost that much so why not take them, right? The nay-sayers say they just give you expensive pee. Well, naysayers, I'm proud of my expensive pee! 😜

Lady - I vary my diet all the time. McDonald's, Steak and Shake, Grocery store deli, Marie Calendars, frozen pizza, the list goes on and on. Not only do I not like to cook, but I also hate waiting in line at the drive-through. And if I do make something at home, if it has more than three ingredients or takes more than 15 minutes it's probably not going to happen. Frozen pizza takes FOREVER! 20 minutes!

We live in a retirement community where elderly residents are part of this struggle. Brain research is going along, and maybe someday..?

I take different supplements for my ailments. This is one that I will check it out.

frozen pizza is kinda iffy. We had one last night, lots of hope for it. We ate one piece, tossed the rest. We have a frozen shepherd's pie, it has possibilities.

Interesting info. I take vitamins...whenever I remember!

Susan - The frozen pizzas are all very different. You have to find one that suits you.

Martha - It's just one of many pills I take.

I take multiple vitamins and minerals, but not a combined multi-vitamin. Something in those has me queasy and burping all day. So I'll stick with my individual calcium, iron, vitamin c and so on.

If the vitamin is alright inside the food, why shouldn't it be all right outside the food, i.e., in the form of a supplement?

River - Luckily they don't bother me. I think individuals could get kind of expensive. I don't even go with brand names. Walgreen generic is good enough.

Kirk - I've read different articles that don't go into much depth about why. I found this from the Mayo Clinic which has a good explanation. And since I'm over 50 it says I should be taking them.
