5761 - Long joke Sunday

Sue sent me the following...
****

During colonial times, William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, was one of Philidelphia's most prominent citizens.

Penn had two maiden aunts who owned a bakery known far and wide for its fruit pies, which were reputed to be the best anywhere.

After many years of success, the two aunts had a serious falling out. They stopped speaking to each other altogether.

One moved across the street and opened her own bakery putting the two into competition.

It wasn't long before a nasty price war ensued with each aunt lowering prices to undercut the other.

Eventually, it got so ridiculous that they were selling their products below cost.

By this time, the only topic of conversation in town was the pie rates of Penn's aunts.

Are you laughing? Some may be, and some may not. If you're a history buff, (or a Gilbert and Sullivan fan) you're laughing. If you're like me, you were staring at that last line saying, "I'm missing something here". Here's what you were missing...
In my defense, I wasn't around in 1879 when this was written. 😁

I'm a proud native Pennsylvanian, and never heard this joke before. It's a classic!

Oh, I got it right away (GROAN) because I'm a huge Gilbert & Sullivan fan. "The Pirates of Penzance" is one of my favourite operettas!

River - All the girls got it.

Bill - And it came from Australia.

Deb - I'm feeling left out. Not really.

Shaw - Now I have to update the post to include a mention of Gilbert and Sullivan.

OY!

My first introduction to Pirates of Penzance was the 1980s version with Kevin Kline and Linda Ronstadt

Mike said...

Kathy - I was never introduced.

Pirates of Penzance is a family favorite. When they were young, we assigned our parts and There was allows an argument for Kevin Kline's Pirate king.

Robyn - Watch out for the bad dark chocolate!

Susan - Everybody knows about the Pirates of Penzance except me!
