I think I've seen this before. It probably has a little bit of truth to it.

So I am at Walmart scanning and bagging my almost $300 worth of groceries while the employee "monitors" and then this happened.
Her - why are you double bagging all of your groceries?
Me - excuse me?
Me - if you don't like the way I'm bagging the groceries, feel free to come on over here and bag them yourself.
Her - that's not my job!
Me - okay, then I will bag my groceries how I please if that's all right with you.
Her - why are you using two bags?!
Me - because the bags are weak and I don't want the handles to break or the bottoms to rip out.
Her - well that's because you are putting too much stuff in the bag. If you took half of that stuff out and put it in a different bag then you wouldn't need to double bag.
*10 seconds of me just staring at her.
Me - so you want me to split these items in half and put half of them in a different bag so that I don't have to double bag.
Her - exactly.
Me - so I would still be using two bags to hold the same number of items.
Her - no because you wouldn't be double bagging.
*me pressing two fingers to my left eye in an attempt to make it stop twitching.
Me - okay so here I have a jug of milk and a bottle of juice double bagged. If I take the milk out and remove the double bagging and just put the milk in the single bag and the juice in that single bag I'm still using two bags for these two items.
Her- no because you are not double bagging them so it's not the same number of bags.
*me looking around at about 10 other customers who at this point are enjoying the show.
Me- is this like that Common Core math stuff I keep hearing about?
Her- never mind you just don't get it.
And with that, she went back to her little Podium so she could continue texting or playing games on her phone or whatever it was she was doing before she decided to come over and critique my bagging skills.

And without doubt it would be impossible to prove her wrong. Mind you, you have to pay the stores to use their bags here. So I don't. We take our own.
Sue - Charging for bags hasn't arrived here yet but there is always talk about it. Except Costco. Costco doesn't have any bags. You're on your own. Most of their stuff is too big to go in a bag anyway.
I've read this before and it is still mind boggling. HOW does she not understand that two bags are two bags no matter how they are used?
Beautiful blog
River - She has a tRUMP truth in her head and nothing can pry it out.
RR - Isn't though?
I see that Rajani Rehana is back ... he left me a slew of identical comments this morning. We have to pay for bags here in NoVa, so I long ago sucked it up and bought a bunch of reusable bags. I make a point of using bags from a different store when I shop, just to piss off the managers.
Hahahahaha!
1) I've read this before and it is sad that it is likely a true story.
2) I try to remember to bring my own shopping bags for small store runs and need to for Aldi or Costco. I even remembered to pack a couple for our recent trip to Mexico where many stores don't have bags - even for purchase.
3) We save the plastic bags we accumulate and donate them to a shelter that converts them into sleeping mats for our unsheltered population. It takes about 800 bags for a single sleeping mat.
Sadly, I've run into several people who would completely agree with the clerk's logic.
Years of shopping at Aldi taught me to always carry a reusable bag into the store. Unless I need something heavy like laundry detergent my Costco money-saving plan is to have a list of things I need and not take a cart. Then if I can't carry it I don't buy it.
Is this a self-checkout line? For $300 worth of groceries? That's one intrepid customer!
Colorado outlawed plastic bags so now we bring our own reusable bags. And I agree with Kirk - I never use self check out for really huge purchases.
Bill - If you check her profile you'll see she's a female and her favorite movie is "The Loin King". That could be my new title!
Nice trick using the wrong bag!
Deb - It is that funny, isn't it? I could see it happening.
John - Do you want me to start saving plastic bags for you? I still ask for plastic as I read that one reusable bag uses up the resources it takes to make 1200 plastic bags.
Kathy - So you would carry TP and paper towels instead of using a cart? I want to go with you the next time you go to Costco so I can watch! 😁
Kirk - At Costco, you can spend $300 and not fill up the cart.
Lady - I never use self-checkout ever. Self-checkout doesn't like me. Even with one item if I try and scan it all I hear from the machine is "You've done something wrong. Ask for help." Plus, I want to keep the checkers working at their jobs.
