5985 - What are you trying to say?

Yesterday's joke led me to a Wikipedia article about Anomic Aphasia.

"Anomic aphasia (also known as dysnomia, nominal aphasia, and amnesic aphasia) is a mild, fluent type of aphasia where individuals have word retrieval failures and cannot express the words they want to say (particularly nouns and verbs)."

I have had that more often lately. You're talking to someone and a word won't come to you. It drives me nuts! Anyway, if you want to read more about it, here's the link to the article.

Reminds me of the Green Acres episode where Oliver Douglas goes to Drucker's General Store wanting to order parts for his tractor. He tells him he needs a whatchamacallit and a thingamabob. Drucker pulls a tractor parts catalog out from behind the counter and begins looking. On one page printed in big, bold letters is WHATCHAMACALLIT, on another page printed in similarly big, bold letters, THINGAMABOB.

Kirk - I've tried to order those two parts with no luck.

I've had a few episodes of words disappearing from my mind just when I need them, but more often I have occasions where I mean one word but say another that has a similar meaning. Or a completely different meaning. Sometimes it matters, sometimes it doesn't, depending on the age of the listener.

Sigh. I lose words more often than I like.

Agnes and I have this problem in different languages - she can't remember words in English and I can't remember them in German. I'd say it drives us nuts, but it's less a drive than an easy putt.

I've been having the same issue, too. If I'm typing something out I'll open a tab for Thesaurus.com, type in a word that's close to what I'm thinking for, and click until I find what I'm thinking of. Of course that doesn't work when I'm speaking.

Me too!

River - It's the 'you know what I mean' syndrome.

Sue - Same here.

Bill - It's a drive with a slice into the woods.

Kathy - Been there, do that.

Cloudia - Me three... or more.
Well, this was a new and different blogger experience today. Your comment didn't show up so I checked spam jail. You were not in jail but your comment was there (I had gotten the email). So I checked publish on the comment even though it looked like it already was published and presto, there you were. I love blogger. HA!

I definitely have this disorder. Just assumed it was the beginning of mental decline.

Lady - We should start a support group and call it... ummmmmm

I'm too familiar. It happens to stroke victims.

Peg - And just old people.

You have so much company here.

Susan - Apparently, a lot of people are with me on this one.
