Well, I got enough warnings about windows 10 not being supported anymore that I thought it was time to upgrade to windows 11. There are now ways to make a computer that supposedly can't work with windows 11 work. My son had already upgraded Claudia's computer to windows 11 with no problems. SO let's do mine, right? RIGHT? NO PROBLEMS, RIGHT?
We had recently changed my hard drive to an SSD. So this upgrade should be really fast. HA! We followed the same procedure as he did before. Everything seemed to work. We followed directions on a YouTube video that he had previously used. It showed how to use the upgrade using Microsoft procedures and files. It took longer to load than he thought it should, but it finally finished.
When it booted back up in Windows 11, everything was running really sloooow. Then the troubleshooting started.
Days past by.
We finally figured out that the install file was still running in the back ground. It's a 5gig file. The hard drive was running at 100%. That's why every thing was slow. Things had to wait their turn to access the hard drive. So we tried to delete the install file. Nope. Not when it's running. After some google searches we found out we could delete the file in safe mode. Safe mode for Windows 11 is not F11. It's 'shift restart'.
We got the file deleted and things started working like they should. So I now have Windows 11 on a non Windows 11 machine. I still ran into slow downs because Windows 11 kept find upgrades it needed to do. As of this posting things seem to be working. 😬

Fingers crossed.
One word for you my friend Chromebook. Anyway, that's just me. I admire the dragons you slay
Just another reason why I love my Mac. And why I'm dreading having to install Windows 11 on both of Agnes's aging PCs and her laptop. Maybe I should just suck it up and just buy new computers for her.
@bilbo : tried Linux ?
Good for you! I hope your fix works.
It has been ages since I have had an actual desktop computer and more than a decade since I've had a laptop computer. I've also been a Chromebook user, almost for as long as they've been out.
You didn't let planned obsolescence get the best of you.
I feel your pain.
i think all mine are upgraded now and i didn't have many problems.... although one of them now refuses to install any updates..... so that's probably going to have to start from scratch...... yuk - hope yours sorts itself out and you enjoy many trouble free hours of computing
I dumped Windows and installed Linux Mint shortly after I retired. I love it. Fresh installs and upgrades run smoothly. I'm never going back to Windows.
I need to cross a lot more than fingers.
I don't think Chromebook can run two 27 inch monitors. 😁
It's still giving me grief.
I almost loaded Ubuntu a while back but I still needed MS Office. Programs like Open Office say they are compatible but they're not. I think everyone should go back to Unix. I never had any problems at work with Unix back in the 80s. We worked with Wyse 75s connected to a Unix mainframe. Sort of like Chromebook now except the mainframe was owned by AT&T and not Microsoft.
I think I'm going to need more fixes. Claudia's computer upgraded with zero problems.
As I mentioned before. I don't think Chromebook could run my two 27 inch monitors.
I fought XP past the very end. I'd got back to XP if they would start doing patches for it again.
I need you to come put your magic feeling hands on my computer.
There are more new options than M&Ms in an M&M store. The layout of 11 looks as good as 10. It's just figuring out where they put stuff this time and figuring out how new options screw up old procedures.
I loved XP. When it is time for me to upgrade to windows 11 I will hand over my laptop to my genius daughter and let her get it all done, then she can show me how it works. It probably isn't too different from 10. At least I hope not.
Every iteration of Windows seems to remove the things I like most and make them less functional and harder to find.
Your computer has to be new enough to properly upgrade. Microsoft does have a workaround which I did. I may be buying a new computer soon.
I may go back to windows 10 soon and take my chances with security.
