6448 - It's all in your head

First, the tornado missed me. It started a few miles Northeast of me heading East then turned Northeast. I was surprised at all the brick buildings than got knocked down.

Now, onto the brain stuff...

A massive genomic study has revealed that parental age, ancestry, and smoking habits subtly influence the number of new genetic mutations (de novo mutations) passed from parents to children. By analyzing whole-genome data from 10,000 parent-child trios, researchers found that most variation in mutation rates comes from parental age, especially the father’s.

A new study reveals that type 2 diabetes is associated with thinning of the brain’s cortex in older adults, particularly in regions responsible for memory and cognition. Using brain scans from a diverse population sample, researchers found that poor blood sugar control may contribute to this structural brain change.

Prolonged sedentary behavior in adults over 50 is linked to cognitive decline and brain shrinkage in regions vulnerable to Alzheimer’s disease. Even among those who exercise regularly, spending more time sitting was associated with worse cognitive outcomes.

A new neuroscience study reveals that music can alter the emotional content of our memories when played during recollection. Participants who listened to emotionally charged music while recalling neutral stories later remembered those stories with emotional tones matching the music.

I know I spend too much time sitting and I blame that on having a laptop and following several blogs daily. I'm a slow reader and even slower at typing, so I'm doing a lot of sitting every day. I already cut the reading list by half and may have to reduce it even more.

I also spend too much time sitting. I try and do something active each day but often fail.

Glad you're okay. I spend more time sitting in winter, when I can't be outside working in the garden. I need to be more careful then.

Glad the tornado missed you!

So if I get up every hour to refill my drink, grab a snack, and take care of any other business before returning to sitting down with my cigar and book I should be okay, right?

Looking for a loophole.

It's not just tornados a person has to worry about.

Close call. Glad you're okay.

Yes I was amazed at all the brick buildings I saw brought down. This is no laughing matter! I'm really happy that you are okay.

More interesting stuff. Thanks Mike. Just wondering how much sitting is too much sitting. I mean I'm up and down and up and down. I don't sit longer than 20 minutes or half hour at the most before I'm up doing something. Is that good enough? Sheesh!

My chiropractor always says that an active lifestyle and a good diet are the secrets to a long life. As much as I hate to admit it, it sounds like he's right :-)

Sit down and think it over before doing anything rash.

Mike said...

I think about being active all the time.

Put on those snow shoes and go for a walk.

Me too!

Sounds good to me!

I've given you 5 things to worry about. Pick one and start working on it! 😄

Mike said...

I'm doing it right now.

Me too!

20 minutes of exercise a day is supposedly good. I think you're OK.

Mike said...

My mind is active and I like my diet. Close enough, right?

Maybe a few of the blogs I visit that never visit mine.

Mike said...

Or just make an occasional visit.

Well done avoiding the tornado; do you have to take special precautions? We`d just hide in the cellar.
We had one last year about 12 miles north; they are rare here in Germany.

we all spend too much time sitting.... these blogs won't read themselves.......

Mike said...

We go into our basement if it's close. This one was closer than we thought but was gone before we thought about doing anything. It tore North St. Louis up, bad.

Mike said...

That's right! Maybe we should get stand up desks... BWAHAHAHAHA!

I knew sitting too much was bad for you, but I had no idea that it was linked to Alzheimer's. It's a good thing I'm on my feet a lot for work to make up for my bad sitting habits when I'm at home.

Glad you are ok. I have definitely heard of the music study but others are intriguing.

I really do need a stand up desk.
