SUNNIS - The branch of Islam that accepts the first four caliphs as rightful successors of Muhammad.

SHIITES - The branch of Islam that regards Ali and his descendants as the legitimate successors to Muhammad and rejects the first three caliphs.

KURDS - A pastoral (shepherds or herders) and agricultural people inhabiting the transnational region of Kurdistan in southwest Asia, the largest ethnic group without their own state.
