Here's the first part of this post ----
Your mother's advice to sit up straight in your chair could be a prescription for lower back pain. A new study using new imaging technology reveals that sitting upright with a straight back (90 degree) and thighs parallel to the floor increases the strain on the lumbar discs in the lower back.
In fact it's better to lean back a bit in a chair, even if looks like slouching. The best position is what you get in a La-Z-Boy, 135 degrees between back and thighs.

And here's the second part (on how I got the first part)----
I was missing our numbers girl so I did a search on google to see if she was anywhere else out there. Where is she?
I found a site that had a reference to her. Successful-blog.com
Which lead me back to her post about sitting. Sitting
Which lead me to the fact that it's been this many days since we've had a new statistic to absorb.

Interesting post on the physics of sitting. Since I have a desk job (ten hours per day of sitting at a computer, punctuated by long walks from office to office in the Pentagon), it's of more than academic interest. We have the so-called "Aeron" chairs, which allow for multiple adjustments and do help ease strain on the back; however, whenever possible, I salvage the inflatable plastic bladders often used for protection in packaging to use as lumbar supports. I also miss the Statistics Lady...she said she'd continue blogging on weekends, but it's been a long time since there's been any activity on her blog. She has, however, left an occasional comment on my blog, so I know she's still out there somewhere.
