Subject: I almost had a fire yesterday AM
Dear Friends,
I just wanted to let everyone know about an incident we had yesterday morning. We had a burned-out florescent light bulb, one of the new curly ones, in our bathroom. Since there were 3 other ones over our vanity, I got busy and did not bother to change the bulb, as the three which still worked made plenty of light. My husband and I were both in the bathroom getting ready and within a second or two I saw a large amount of smoke drifting over our vanity and smelled smoke. We turned out the lights and tried to find the cause. We discovered that the base of the old burned-out bulb was burning. I did not know that a burned out bulb of the new florescent type could catch on fire. If we had left the room, I'm not sure what would have happened. Also, I notice the bulb contains mercury, so we cannot put it on the land fill. Does anyone know how we are supposed to get rid of them?

Another problem with these bulbs is that they don't live up to the 5 yr life that they are supposed to have.
So we can go "green" and save the environment by using less energy only to have to find a way to dispose of them without harming the environment later.
Thanks for the uplifting post, Mike.
I guess we can get rid of this toxic waste the same way the government does...wait until there are so many of them that the problem is staggering, then empower the Secretary of the Treasury to buy them all, put them in new packages, and sell them to someone else.
