1429 - Day?

What's going on today? I know it's something but I can't put my finger on it. The 14th. Is it flag day? No, that's in August (or May). Although in 1778 the United States Flag was formally recognized by a foreign naval vessel for the first time.

In 1859 Oregon was admitted as the 33rd U.S. state. But that's no reason to get all riled up. In 1899 voting machines were approved by the U.S. Congress for use in federal elections. But that just means voting fraud became mechanized. Again not a reason to celebrate.

In 1929 the Saint Valentine's Day massacre happened with seven people, six of them gangster rivals of Al Capone's gang, murdered in Chicago, Illinois. But I don't think we would want to cheer on gangsters.

In 1946 The Bank of England was nationalized. Something that the USA might be doing soon if our bankers don't get there head out of their asses.

In 2004, 2005 and 2008 lots of people around the world have died on this day. Maybe that's it. Today has become a day of death. So in memory I think I'll go out and get some flowers. I wonder if anyone else will think to do this today?

Personally I get all geared up to celebrate this day and then I remember it's the day Oregon was admitted to the union and that ruins everything.

We actually watched "The Untouchables" this past weekend. This is the one with Kevin Costner as Ness. In the movie, it displayed Capone (Deniro) crying during an Italian opera performance while the St. Valentine's Massacre was taking place.

Capone was a romantic...uh softy?
