1473 - Drill baby drill

(PhysOrg.com) -- In what can only be described as a mammoth undertaking, scientists, led by British co-chiefs, Dr Damon Teagle of the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton, England and Dr Benoit Ildefonse from Montpellier University in France, have announced jointly in an article in Nature that they intend to drill a hole through the Earth’s crust and into the mantle; a feat never before accomplished, much less seriously attempted. (WHOLE ARTICLE (short))

So here's the deal. If your going to drill down to the mantle, why not make a better use of the hole. Take all the spent nuclear reactor fuel and stuff it down the hole back to where it came from. It will redilute back into the mantle never to be seen again for a billion years.

While were at it, drill holes under nuclear power plants 5 miles deep. If the things start leaking, stuff all the fuel down the hole.

I get patent rights on this stuff.

Exciting concept but I wonder how many years they'll have to drill for. I wonder how'll they'll keep themselves funded for that length of time.

Not a bad idea...but I think you'll have both the United Mine Workers and the Dwarves Union finding some fault with it. Oh, and Amanda asked the right question.

A - I don't think it will take them too long a time the way they are talking about it. If the US funds it, it would only cost about 5 or 6 Iraq war days.

B - Everyone will find fault with it except the company that steals my idea and patents it.

What could possibly go wrong by drilling into the mantle?

HEY! Don't be negative about my possible money making patent. Nothing could go wrong. Trust me. I've done extensive research. Really!
