So your sitting there watching TV and you start to doze off. Suddenly your body jumps a little. Not a lot. Just enough to bounce you back into total conciousness.
What happened? Why you had a hypnic jerk. Or to be more precise, a hypnagogic myoclonic twitch. Is that a bad thing? As always, it depends. And it really depends on your trust in Wikipedia.
Article contains wessel words? Hey, sometimes wessel words are good. They can really get a point across. Anyway the article starts off as follows...
A hypnic jerk, hypnagogic jerk, sleep start, or night start, is an involuntary myoclonic twitch which occurs during hypnagogia, just as a person is beginning to fall asleep, often causing them to awaken suddenly for a second. Physically, hypnic jerks resemble the "jump" experienced by a person when startled, often accompanied by a falling sensation. A higher occurrence in people with irregular sleep schedules is reported.
It's a short article that doesn't take much time unless you want more info and start following links and references. Go for it.

Ah, so its the 'hypnic jerk' that I'm waiting for each night when I take Adrian to sleep. I always wait to see him moving like that because it tells me that its safe for me to leave the room.
A - You've learned something new today. Take the rest of the day off.
Well, I've gone to bed with jerks! This was interesting.
Hypnic Jerks are just like any other jerk. They all suck.

Funny, Heidi. (Okay, maybe not so funny for you...)
BSH - I agree with John.
J - Yeah maybe, but they have a cool name.
J - I thought of you and your sleep tests when I found this.
Hey, great! Just what we need in an election season ... more kinds of jerks.
B - But these are special jerks. Not run of the mill political jerks.
