1954 - Books (and shelves)

Modern art with a twist. A functional twist. Come and get some books. This is 'bookyard - an outdoor library by Massimo Bartolini'. It's in St. Peter's Abbey. So if you're close you can go get some free books.

After they built the 12 rows of shelves they loaded them up with soon to be discarded library books. You can help yourself to books. Donations accepted.

More info and pictures at the link.

As a side note, here's the last two comments from the site I found this on.

What happens when it rains?

Water comes pouring from the sky. You should see it. It's entirely absurd.

Free books? How cool. Most libarries hold used book sales. Those also get rid of unshelveable donations.

ANgel - If I'm remembering right, the librarys around here have a free book table outside the secure perimeter of the main library area.

I love this idea but I love the comments even more.
Some people have too much time on their hands.

Re: comment about what happens when it rains...some comedians have made a very decent income
taking things literally. Wish I had thought of it first!

That's pretty cool. Except for them being exposed to the elements.

There's a large used bookstore in Knoxville that has a few book box. They hope that some unaware or merciful souls will tote really unsellable books off.

Peg - You mean like bloggers? Well SOME bloggers.

Dianne - The comments made the post.

Bilbo - Careful, she'll have you doing an intervention on Rick.

Claudia - Literal can be pretty funny.

Jay - Those pictures actually beg the question what DOES happen when it rains.

Heidi - Sometimes the you can find the best books in spots like that.

Free books and yet there are so few people around. Maybe they took the photos early in the morning....

I really liked how the shelves were custom made to fit the slope in the ground.
