Success kid story.
True story. I was at the University of Missouri at Rolla taking chemical engineering. I think it was one of the first chemical engineering classes I took. Everything was normal. Everyone in the class was struggling.
Around the middle of the semester we all sat down in class and the instructor said, 'I think we'll have our midterm test today.'
Obviously panic set in because no one was ready for that little surprise.
So he passes the test out and it's a test that is worth 200 points total. It was a long test. I don't think anyone actually finished the test. But we all knew the instructor graded on the curve.
We got to class the next time and he passed out the graded tests. I saw my point total. 10. That's right 10 points out of 200. And then I saw my grade. A 'C'. I got a C for 10 points.
I asked the guy next to me what grade he got. He said an 'A'. How many points did he get? 16. That's right, 16 points was an A.
So if I had only known twice as much as I did I would have gotten 20 points and probably a super triple A plus to go with it.

Dang, I needed more instructors like that.
That's grading on the curve with a real vengance. But a surprise mid-term? What would he expect??
Peg - Or more classmates like I had.
Angel - He got a surprise too didn't he?
One time in an accounting class after a test the professor asked if we wanted to be graded on a curve and everyone except me said yes. So, he said we voted and it would be on a curve. 96 and up was an A. He set everyone up! ha

As curves go, that one is extremely skewed. I doubt that much is demonstrated as to knowledge in that case.
Jay - It would be disheartening to get a 75 and an F to go with it.
Elvis - The instructor obviously did not prepare the class for the test.
