From the article....
THE BATTLE LINES OF TODAY’S DEBATES OVER GUN CONTROL, STAND-YOUR-GROUND LAWS, AND OTHER VIOLENCE-RELATED ISSUES WERE DRAWN CENTURIES AGO BY AMERICA’S EARLY SETTLERS.
So with that start here's a map to look at to see where your part of the country falls. (click it to big it.)
The original (long) ARTICLE has a break down for each area that is a little to generalized but goes back to the beginnings of the country and how we wound up in these sectionalized groupings.
I see articles about how the US will eventually break up into separate countries. Maybe this is how it will look somewhat eventually.

I always worry about these "US splitting into several countries" stories. Mostly because I wonder if you're stuck in the "country" you currently live in when it happens, or will you be allowed to freely move to another "country." Pretty scary.

The article is a bit long on speculation and pessimism.
Montana is in the Far West. Fair enough.
Tennessee is in Greater Appalachia.
Very interesting article. I think I'm moving to Australia to stay in Amanda's spare room.
