I found this yesterday. There are three different kinds of dashes. This explains them and shows examples of how to use them.
Here they are and how to get them (on a PC)...
- Dash, just hit the dash key.
– En dash, Alt +0150
— Em dash, Alt +0151
I will be checking your blogs for proper punctuation from now on. There will be consequences.

Interesting.
The em dash is new to me.
Dash it all!
All very interesting, but I'm confident I won't remember it two days from now.
Mz Smarty Pants over here. Don't be surprised if, when you check my blog, to see six or seven em dashes. I use it so much that instead of Alt +0151, I set up an autocorrect. I type em and the dash automatically inserts.
Sue - The title says it for me. Who knew? Apparently, Shirley did.
Deb - Yeah, but which one?
Kathy - Ummmm, remember what?
Shirley - Well well well well WELL well well. Mz Smarty Pants indeed!
My Satnav is a - --- -- - --- --, is that spelled correctly?
When I write, I start with a lot of punctuations in the margin, including various dashes, and then I use them in a random order in the text when I'm finished. Sometimes, I have some spare ones which are not used. - ? ,, " !
God bless.
Anon - Are you selling TOMTOM's?
Victor - You can't do that Victor. If you're finished, then nothing more can go in.
I not only won't remember any of this, I won't use any of this and I'm sure I'll have consequences for all my improper punctuation and flagrant disregard for the Rules of the written word. *Winks*
Dawn - I've forgotten all of the examples already. But I remember the cool different lines and the codes to print them.
Thanks for this cool post. Do the Oxford comma next.
