5277 - Parkinson's info

Well, I found an article about Parkinson's' that has a lot of interesting info in it. It's not that long, but if you know someone with Parkinson's, you need to pass this along to them.

Among the eight genes identified, five — LRRC37A2MMRN1GPNMBZSWIM7CPLX1 — were significantly associated with Parkinson’s in at least one brain tissue in a validation replication analysis. Again, LRRC37A2 was disease-associated in all 13 tissue samples.

...current GWAS data found a positive correlation with older age at first sexual intercourse and Parkinson’s.

The team pointed out that studies show “smoking is associated with a lower incidence of [Parkinson’s disease],” and nicotine stimulates nerve cells that are damaged in Parkinson’s and protects against nerve cell damage in animal models. (Nicotine patch?!)

Fascinating. And it is yet another cruel disease.

Sue - this is the most positive article I've seen in a long time.
And what's eerie, I'm listening to Boston's 'Long Time'. As I was typing the words 'long time', Boston was singing them.

So, smoking reduces the incidence of Parkinson's Disease, but you die of lung cancer, anyhow. Hmmm ...

I've watched a couple of people who had Parkinson's deteriorate and pass on. It's a horrible disease.

When my mother got Parkinson's she took a job as a cocktail mixer at a local bar. That's what I call accepting one's fate ;-)

Bill - Or nicotine patches. I'll have to ask the doctor about for Claudia.

Kathy - Some people can hang on for a long time. Others, not so much.

Stu - Yes it is. Claudia couldn't do that. She can barely get around right now. But there are other things besides her Parkinson's going on right now.

My friend's mother just passed from Parkinson's. She was a smoker too. But they might have put her cause of death as COVID.

Matt - They say people don't die from Parkinson's. It's usually from all the other problems Parkinson's creates. I think the number one cause is falls.
