You watch a youtube video and the next thing you know they're using a super duper magic machine. They say, well just rent one. Yeah, try and find one.
I was looking at buying a stump remover because I've got a bunch of old tree stumps. There are small ones and big ones. The big ones cost lots of money. The small ones would take a two day job and turn it into a two week job.
So I thought, rent one. A local rental place plus a local Home Depot both rent them. They both have ONE machine. Can I reserve it? Nope. Both places have a first come first serve policy. They open at 6AM. If you're not first, come back tomorrow, or the next day, or...
The main problem here is I'm not a 6AM person. Maybe to go to bed, but not to get up. So I'm waiting for a great sale on a not so expensive but really good stump grinder. One of these days...

Search the yellow pages for companies that specialise in stump removal and get it done that way. They have their own equipment and can come at a time to suit you.
River - I've got 14 stumps and they charge 60 to 100 dollars a stump. It would be cheaper to buy a stump remover and sell it when I'm done.
You just need to convince them that you're the very person they need to rent that machine to ... I can help you write a really good stump speech.
There is a whole website dedicated to hiring these.
I think it is even called Grinder ;-)

Kathy - I don't know if I could convince them to be there at 6am not knowing if it was going to do any good or not. Plus it would have to be loaded on my trailer.
Peg - Finding someone to do that would be a tough process.
Matt - I think each place only has one and the demand is high enough that they don't have to be nice.
Cloudia - You would think they would have two or three at each store.
Guess you're stumped then.
