The person who posted this mistakenly called this the Brocken Spectrum. Probably because of the rainbow. But the spectre is the shadow in the middle. Wikipedia article. And there are a boatload of pictures on Google Images.

I live only about 70 miles from the Harz mountains so have seen this phenomen on many hillwalking trips. Still eerie though.
I can see where people who lived long before scientific explanations would be awed by something like this.
