6155 - US troops

Where are US military members stationed, and why? Well, this article can answer all your questions. It seems we have service members in just about every country, even Russia. My guess is most of the countries with low head counts are service members in embassies. There are several interactive maps to play with. Have fun!

When the article mentions why some states have higher concentrations of military installations than others, it neglects to mention political influence ... any attempt to close a military base is fought tooth and nail by its Congressional delegation because bases provide jobs and tax revenue. In addition, a fair number of Army posts are located where they are because they were built during the "Indian Wars" to fight against the indigenous population.

USA Facts is a huge rabbit hole of information.

Bill - Fought tooth and nail is being polite.

Kathy - Amen to that!

Interesting information. Thanks.

I doubt Texas will ever make good on its threat to secede with all those federal troops there. Not just because the troops would stop them, but if the Texas was somehow successful anyway, think of what all the base closings would do to the state's economy!

Kirk - Now that's funny! I like it!

I wonder why Texas and Califonia need so many?

I wonder why Colorado in not on there? In the springs we have Fort Carson, Shiever AFB, Peterson AFB, The Air Force Academy and Cheyenne Mountain. That is a lot of military.
