Do you like the seven day week? How long has it been around? Were there other types of weeks? Lots of questions. Lots of vague answers found at the 'Calendars thru the ages' site.
It's not to long a read. But it has a lot of information.
How about a 5 day week? WITH a two day weekend! Yeah I know. That would be like government work, right?
Anyway, go read about THE SEVEN DAY WEEK. (lots of links and other info on this site too)
Including the plan to reform the calendar to a more nerdy consistancy.

I don't mind having 5 weekdays but I always thought that 3 days for the weekend would be good - one day for being super excited and energetic, second for doing nothing and relaxing (sometimes it seems like a waste of a 2 day weekend to do this) and then a third day to spend dreading the upcoming Monday.
A - I'll go for the 3 day weekend too.
The calendar we already have seems to have too many Mondays and not enough weekends. I vote for changing Friday to Pre-Saturday and Monday to Sunday, Part 2. Presto! - four-day weekends! You're welcome.
B - Throw in high holy day Wednesdays and you have a deal.
