1854 - POP!

Continuing on the theme of useless inventions, here's Purdue University with a new record for a Rube Goldberg machine. What does it do? It blows up a ballon and then pops it. In 300 steps. This is my kind of stuff. It's sort of like the government except this actually does something.




 

1842 - Magic? or edits...

I think I've found something new and then I go to Youtube and find out it has 6 million hits. Oh well, it's new to me.

I can't decide if this is just an editing trick or if there is some magician magic doing this. John, let us know.

1835 - Maps

Maps are falling out of favor with computers being able to pull up anything in the world at a moments notice. But maps, for me, are like books for a lot of people. It's nice to hold a piece of paper in your hand. And with a map it's a big piece of paper.

So there's a guy in Oregon that decide to make a super map. The porno map for map makers. Here's something from an article about this guy.

Other mapmakers I spoke with marveled at the handcrafted beauty of the thing. (One guy reminisced about a Soviet map from the 1970s that used different colors for freshwater and saltwater lakes. He said Imus’ map achieves that level of specificity.) This is an example of heartfelt, artisanal cartography coming from a pro at the top of his game.

1833 - Plates

I found this just laying around on another blog just waiting to be borrowed.

If you're driving around Pennsylvania you may see some strange personalized licence plates.

What are those Pennsylvanians doing, holding up strange license plates like that? Inviting typographic artist Jessica Hische to visit, actually!

Jessica Hische said 'Today the Society of Design in PA (my home state) invited me to speak. In doing so, they created the most touching awesome thing I’ve ever seen and I spent the last hour and a half crying at my desk just amazed that 35 people would go out of their way to make me feel so loved and appreciated. On twenty-seven actual registered license plates, which individuals in the club now use on their cars, they invited me to visit.'

I thinking someone could come up with some interesting messages if the plates were applied for at different times.

 

1832 - OK girls

I've had this link for awhile. It's a short article by Jamye Waxman. Who?

When I saw the name Jamye I thought, "Please make it be a female, please".

And then when I looked for an image for this post all that came up was birds. There was another image but I thought, "I can't use that." Then this one popped up.

So here's a tip for the girls. Pun intended.

And remember, I'm just trying to help the girls be healthy.

 

1829 - The Twins Who Share a Body

Is this one of those things that everybody but me knows about? Abigail and Brittany Hensel - conjoined twins. Two people from the belly button up. One person from the belly button down. OK so I sort of stole this from Natures' Mighty Pictures but just this one, not all of them.

Here's a 45 minute video of their life up to about 16 years old. They are 22 years old now according to wikipedia.

1827 - I forgot...

... that today was PI day. 3.14 Usually google has it on their main page to remind me but not this year. At least it's not too late to start celebrating by eating pizza pie, pot pie, peach pie, apple pie, cherry pie, anything crumb pie, and more pie pie.

As long as we're perusing the National Geographic site, look what else we found. Puzzles.

You pick a puzzle from the page above. When you click on it, it scrambles up like below.

Then when you click on the map, it disappears and you get to rebuild it with the pieces.

There are about 20 puzzles that take about 10 minutes apiece to finish.

1818 - Big Bent

Well well. Finally. Someone has come out with a decent SUV. I've been thinking of getting a new vehicle but just couldn't seem to find the right one. This might be it.

After months of rumors, Bentley revealed today a concept for its first sport utility vehicle ever: the 600-hp Bentley EXP 9 F. When it comes to vehicles for the wealthiest people in the world, restraint is so last century. With ultra-luxury vehicle sales rising on strong demand from China and the Middle East, the SUV would make the most financial sense as an addition. Given that the Continental starts around $190,000 and the Mulsanne around $280,000, it's easy to imagine a Bentley SUV with a sticker of about $250,000. Powered by a twin-turbo W-12 capable of 600 hp and 590 ft-lbs. of torque, Bentley says the EXP 9 would rank among the fastest vehicles of its kind. All that motive force gets to the ground through an 8-speed transmission and all-wheel-drive system turning 23-inch chrome wheels that are as bling-y as anything from Tire Rack. Inside lies the usual assortment of hand-stitched leathers, wood veneers and one-percentery touches like a split tailgate that folds down to reveal a custom dining set.


And then there is this. It's own little bar. But I'm not sure if I want to pull over and open the tailgate just to get a drink. I like my alcohol handy when I'm driving, don't you?

 

1791 - Super Bowl Canada

Actually a Canadian Super Bowl Budweiser ad. My daughter found this....


A Budweiser commercial for the Canadian broadcast of the Super Bowl. A pair of Ontario beer league recreation hockey teams get 'flash mobbed' by hundreds of fans. The teams were told a production group was doing a documentary on recreation hockey leagues. So they have NO idea of what's coming.

Imagine a few handfuls of people in the stands for years and then one night... they came.. and stayed the whole game.. and they brought confetti cannons.
