1851 - Random pictures

Here's some pictures I saved looking for a theme to go with them. The theme will be randomness. (click 'em to big 'em)

This is just a cool picture of volcanic lightning.

If you're looking for a birthday present for me....

Or how about the truckers friend. I'd just like to carry this around and look badass.

I think I found a new library project for my house.

When I saw this I thought it was a new Barbie doll. But I think it's really Nicky Minaj with a bad makeup job. Unless it's a Nicki Manaj Barbie doll.

1421 - Snow day

I made it!! Yesterday was Habitat day. There was supposed to be a "'"'"little"'"'" snow. I get up and look out at my previously cleaned off car to see 4 to 5 inches of new snow on it. The streets? Snow packed. I call the Habitat weather line. Nothing. Which means 'COME ON DOWN'!!

So I check the TV weather just to see what they have to say about the rest of the day. Their coverage? Oh yeah, it snowed a little, now for other news. WAIT! Snowmageddon was coming and dumped LESS snow than it did last night and this is the coverage?!

So off I go to Habitat thinking I'm going to be the only dummy that shows up. Nope. There's people scurrying all over the place, in the snow. I hoped they had some inside work cause outside and me were not going to be. And they did thank goodness. I spent the day in the nice warm house helping lay flooring. Not a bad gig for a snowy Saturday.

You know, one of these days I'll remember to take my camera with me and take some updated pictues. HA! That'll be the day. Me, up at 6AM trying to remember stuff? But stranger things have happened. Not many, but a few, I think.

1398 - Nothing

Here I am at one in the morning again trying to come up with something and have nothing. I have to get up at oh-dark thirty to do Habitat again tommo.... today, so I'm going to bed.

Wait! I just thought of something!!! I'm going to scan it in. Hold on! It's coming. Common sense would tell me to stop and get to bed but.... well, read on.

1314 - Thieves, Safety

I got an email from someone. It went as follows....

"Let's see here. I need to shower, shave, eat some oatmeal, put on my new Obama T-shirt, grab my 9mm and hold up a convenience store.

New Fashion Rage In Police Mug Shots, These are actual Police Photos.

Just think about this for a second:
Did you ever see anyone arrested wearing a Bush T-shirt, or for you older guys, an Eisenhower, Gerald Ford, Ronald Reagan, or even Nixon, or Bob Dole shirt. There MUST be a message here, but I can't quite grasp it.

Maybe you can help me out here.

Yes I can. Here's a typical picture of a Bush loving thief:

Notice he's wearing a suit and tie. There's no reason to post more pictures because they all look the same. And they're all really good at hiding. Guess how many politicians guys like this own. They're not going to jail. Well not many of them. Sometimes they catch these jerks.

********

OK change of subject - SAFETY. You can never be too safe.

This is how to correctly hold on in a moving train...

No, No, NOOO, the older guy by the door!!!!

1313 - Double lucky

Double lucky. You get to sit around for awhile and learn about life. I saw this on PBS a few days ago. It's called The Parking Lot Movie. Well the parking lot 'short'. It's an Independent Lens production that's about 53 minutes. It's about some guys in Virgina (Bilbo is that you?) that have worked or are working at an old time parking lot. It's about life. I can't get a picture here on this one. Here's the link to the short on PBS.

1299 - Habitat

Well I finally got back to Habitat. Our group has sort of been on the sidelines this summer. But a new leader for our group with a fresh attitude has gotten things rolling again. If you remember Habitat from last year (POST 848), today was uneventful.

( This is a view of the houses earlier in the year. They are nearly done now. Maybe next Sunday I'll remember to take a camera ....... maybe.)

Well not in a big way. Habitat has been begging for house leaders and crew leaders. My whole reason to go is to pound on things with hammers and whatever. I don't need to be in charge of anybody. So the crew leader today was an 'I don't know how old' kid. I call her a kid because she is probably fresh out of (or still in) college.

But she did a decent job of keeping people busy. She even handled rejection well when she would ask us older guys to do something and we said no. (This was her third day. I've got so many days in I've lost count.)

So in the AM I was inside helping clean and doing paint touch up. (boring) In the PM things turned around. GUY STUFF!!! Digging post holes, mixing concrete, setting fence posts. GUY STUFF!!!

But then the real exciting thing happened. The build site is in North St. Louis City. The guarded parking lot is about 6 blocks from the build site with the 'sign in' area about half way in between. I left the work site a little later than everyone else. I walked back by the sign in area and kept going. Then I started thinking, was the parking lot 2 blocks or 3? Was it a half a block off the street I was going down? Did I have to ..... where the hell is the parking lot!!!! I'm wandering around (walking) North St. Louis with a vague idea of where I'm going.

After a few miss steps I found the lot. The guard is sitting inside the fenced area with the gate closed. I have to ask him to open up and he checks me out to make sure I'm a Habitat person. I was the second last car to leave the lot. Next week I'm either parking closer or leaving earlier.

************

Holy crap! It's 10/10/10 today! I'm going to have to call into the Jay and Matt show at 10:10.

1261 - Virus

A virus? What kind? The PC!!! kind. Get your minds out of the gutter.

A friend called and said his PC caught a cold. His daughters' boy friend techy guy was going to come over and reload XP but hadn't had time to. I said I'd come over and take a look. After all, what the hell else do I have to do being retired and all? So I go to Bob's house. He says is this going to take long? BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Have a seat Bob.

So what's he got? The 'antivir' virus. This is one that pops up on your screen and says - You have a virus. Click here and we'll fix it. Somebody clicked here and then the fun began. When this thing takes over your machine it won't let any window stay open. You can see a window pop up but it's gone just as fast. Even Task Manager won't stay open.

So over the course of time I'm trying all sorts of things to beat this. Antivir keeps popping up asking do you want to buy it so it can fix the problem. If you click yes, IE will come up but it takes you only to the Antivir site and asks for your credit card. I'm not biting on that.

So it's boot, reboot, boot, reboot, (WAKE UP BOB!!!) boot, reboot .... looking for a way in. Finally I'm thinking what if I can open task manager BEFORE antivir loads? So I reboot and start hitting ctl alt del as XP is loading. Up pops task manager and it stays up!! Ah HA! Now I have access to the processes and can shut things down.

I see a svchost that seems to be running to much and zap it. There was also a file name that didn't look familure so I zapped it too. I click on IE and TADA! It's open. Now all it takes is downloading a shareware antivir zapper and a good copy of AVG and he's back in business. Nothing missing or messed up on his hard drive.

Bob's talking about buying a new computer. One of those Mac thingys. We know how reliable those are don't we Bilbo? But I'm glad Macs are around. It keeps PC prices lower.

1002 - Salsa

Got this in an email. This is supposedly a 93 year old and her 29 year old great grandson doing the salsa. In checking the net she is also listed as 92, 87, 80 and 75. Then I found this BLOG where a blogger found a little more info.

The video on the link is 5 minutes. Below is a shortened version.

893 - Another triple

Unlike the triple in a previous post this has to do with baseball. Triple plays are unusual enough, but when it's an unassisted triple play its an even rarer event. I don't know how long this video will be available but here's a link to MLB's site that has it right now.

TRIPLE PLAY

Here's a link to MLB's site for all the unassisted triple plays ever (not many). Don't bother with the video links. You have to subscribe to see them.

891 - He's going baaAAAck

Remember post 848? I'm going back there today. Wish me luck.

Amanda, I finally answered your question on post 848 (which I just found).

I've also added 'Labels' on the left side column at the bottom.

873 - Strange bedfellows

A conservative friend sent this to me. I think he watched the video and just forwarded it without investigating on it's source. It seems like a conservative rant against the government but it's an ad from the ACLU! It's actually pretty funny. Have a look.

852 - Misc

Some miscellaneous stuff today. Bandit sent me a couple a emails. One of them was 26 true false statements that were all supposedly true. I checked out some of them (he let's me do that) and they weren't. So much for that post.

Here's some phrases I found on other blogs recently. (with new words)

- click to embiggen
- Nice to meet you... or intermeet you..

And then there was one Bandit sent me that I'll probably use tomorrow. The strange thing is I swore that I've seen and used it before. So I did a word search on my blog. I put the word 'powered' in the search box. No hits. What? A simple word like powered? Nope, not one hit.

OK how about the word 'freeway'? Nope, no hits here either. Seems I've never used these words in over two years of blogging. Of course now I'll get one hit on each word. After tomorrow two hits.

And how about this for trivia. I checked my favorites folder in explorer. Over the years I have gathered 1406 favorites. My guess is there's some duplicates in there. And I probably haven't check most of them since I saved them to begin with. But I've got them if I need them.

798 - Movie review

Angels and Demons. Good movie. It doesn't follow the book exactly, but close enough. Of course if there has been an extended period of time from reading the book to seeing the movie it might not make a difference. And being old with a certain degree of memory loss helps too. Everything is new.

But that said, the movie follows the book close enough that you shouldn't be disappointed. Unless you're the type that's disappointed by things like that. Then I can't help. You're on your own. Just go see the ....... no wait! for the video.

796 - Misc junk

Here are a few things that I have gathered that aren't worth a full post. So I'll waste your time today with some miscellaneous junk.

1. Ever wonder how many favorite links you have saved? Go to explore. Then to your name. Then to favorites. Right click and click properties. I have 1481 links saved. I check them every day. .... No really!!!!

2. I ran across a file that ended with a file extention of 6yx. So I went HERE to see what kind of file it was. It wasn't anything. File deleted.

3. “Studies in 2004 and 2006 showed that normal subjects exposed to images of frightened faces or faces of people from another race will show increased activity of the amygdala, even if that exposure is subliminal.”

So we're all hard wired to be idiots.

647 - Calendar

Here's an idea for next year. I'll be in charge. Then John, Bilbo, Fiona and Rima can do some research so we can put this together. OK, Claudia can help too. Let's do a calendar that has all the religious holiday's for ALL the major religions. See the pie chart below. We'll want to pick up all the various sects of the main 17. The other category could get a little labor intensive. Our two government workers can do that since they have lots of free time. Other people are welcome to volunteer.

I think this calendar will be big. I think every day will probably be covered multiple times by some sect of various religions. Some days may be bigger than others. The new rule will be if three or more events from any religion happen on that day, it's a holiday. So let's get going. Send me updates and I'll tell you how I think you're doing.
